MTS-8088: Microprocessor Training System

The MTS-8088, an 8088 Microprocessor Trainer, can help you become an expert in Microcomputer systems. This trainer with optional expansion modules will enable you to learn both HARDWARE and SOFTWARE design & troubleshooting for Microprocessor based systems!

  • Aluminum-framed case with accessory panel for safe & easy carrying and storage.
  • Open front panel design with safe and easy access power plug and switch.
  • All possible required DC power supplies in today's electronic applications, GND, +5V, +12V, +3.3V, & -12V, are provided on the colored banana binding posts for easy access.

  • 8088-2 CPU runs at 4.77 MHz. However, a clock rate of 8 MHz can be achieved by using a 24 MHz crystal oscillator.
  • RAM: The system provides 32K SRAM, 24K of which is reserved for user applications. 1 MB of RAM is optional.
  • ROM: The system provides 32K EPROM memory, 16K of which is reserved for user application programs.
  • Keyboard: It has 56 keys which include the alphanumeric characters A - Z and 0 - 9 and special ASCII symbols.
  • Display: The onboard 40x2 LCD module or an 80x24 monochrome monitor can be used. The latter requires a Hercules card.
  • Printer interface: MTS-8088 provides a built-in standard Centronics printer interface, which is one of the most versatile general parallel printer interfaces available. The connection cable is the same as those used in IBM PCs.
  • RS-232 interface: The 8255 controls the RS232 interface. The protocol can be programmed for different baud rates, data bits, and stop bits.
  • I/O expansion slot: This 63-pin expansion slot provides signals which are compatible with the IBM PC expansion slot, but no DMA function is provided. Any IBM PC compatible interface card with no DMA function may be connected to the MTS-8088 through this expansion slot.
  • Status port: The status port is used to display keyboard status such as Caps Lock, Ins, and Ctrl-P. Each of these status are indicated by LEDs which light when the function is enabled. In addition, it provides the speaker interface to generate sound.
  • Parallel control interface: Three IC's are used to provide parallel controls. They are the 8255, which contains three 8-bit I/O ports, the 8254, which provides three timers, and the 8259A, which provides five interrupt signals.
  • Experiment area: An area on the main board and solderless breadboard with 1580 tie-points are reserved for circuit designs and experiments.
  • DC Power, +5V/9A, +12V/1A, +3.3V/08A, -12V/10.2A, & GND, are provided on the colored banana binding posts.

Software Function

  • 8088 assembler/ disassembler; Assembly language coding.
  • Memory commands: D-display, M-move, C-compare, E-edit, and F-fill.
  • Display and rewrite, register contents.
  • Single step program execution and debugging.
  • Breakpoint debug, for setting up to 10 breakpoints for program debugging.
  • Numerical systems conversions and calculations, such as conversion from binary to decimal or addition of hexadecimal numbers.
  • Communication routines for downloading and uploading between the MTS-8088 and external systems.
  • Driver routines for RS232, Keyboard, Printer, Hercules card, and LCD display.
  • Tape recorder driver routine (Optional).
  • Cross-Transfer BIOS for Disk system (Optional).
  • EPROM driver routine (Optional).
  • Demo programs for each experiment (Optional).
  • Monochrome display driver routine (Optional).
